Introduction

At the TU Delft, faculty of Architecture, the project ‘designing the low-carbon cityscape and landscape’ will start in September. Led by professor Dirk Sijmons, the project team shall examine the physical footprint of energy consumption and the spatial impact of the transition towards a new energy system based on renewable resources. The team wants to look at several future energy scenarios on different levels of scale: regions, cities and households.

Problem definition / assignment

Mankind has managed to burn a supply of fossil biomass that took 400 million years to accrete in just about 400 years. Before this period we had to manage with our daily dose of sunlight, and we’ll have to do that again when our stock of fossil fuels has been depleted. This project deals with the exponential growth of our energy consumption and the inevitable energy transition we’ll soon be facing.
